Shaker Platform Beds, Made in Ohio: Simple Lines Built to Last

Cozy Shaker room featuring rocking chairs and candle sconces by a window. Perfect for serene moments.

If you’re looking for a Shaker solid wood platform bed, look no further than Ohio. Right here in Columbus, T.Y. Fine Furniture handcrafts Shaker-inspired platform beds that capture everything people love about the style: clean lines, honest materials, and construction quality that’s meant to endure for generations.

We’re not Shaker ourselves, but we build with a similar philosophy, and it shows in the details of our Shaker platform bed, from its simple silhouette to the traditional joinery.

Meet Our Shaker-inspired Platform Bed

The Shaker furniture aesthetic is defined by its simplicity. There are no excessive details; everything is stripped down to the basics and what’s functional. Our platform bed is inspired by this no-nonsense sensibility, right down to the slender, tapered legs, quintessential to Shaker design. With all these features combined, the effect is a piece of furniture that is not visually heavy, even when it’s made with solid wood throughout

Featuring clean lines and timeless craftsmanship, this is our Shaker platform bed.

Our Shaker platform bed is made of natural, solid hardwood throughout–no particleboard or veneers. While it’s handcrafted, we do use machines to make the cutting more efficient. A very traditional craftsman may not be happy about this. Interestingly, the Shakers weren’t purists about hand tools and actually invented some labor-saving innovations of their own. But while we use machines, the finer details of a piece are hand-shaped to ensure the kind of finesse a machine alone can’t deliver.

Look closely at where the legs meet the rails, and you’ll see traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. It’s a basic technique, but when crafted well, it keeps the bed frame stable and strong for decades to come.

What Makes Our Shaker Platform Bed Different

The Shakers weren't opposed to stains or color on their furniture—it was permitted within the sect—but they always applied it in a way that respects the integrity of a material as beautiful as natural hardwood.

We approach finishing in a similar way, and if there's one detail that truly sets our Shaker solid wood platform bed apart, it’s the finish. We use a proprietary, zero-VOC wood finish that's food-grade and non-toxic. Unlike polyurethane-based finishes that sit on top of the wood as a plastic-like film, our finish soaks into the grain, nourishing the material from its fibers and helping it age gracefully over time. The simple idea behind it is to let the wood be wood.

Shaker Bed FAQs

What are the key characteristics of a Shaker-style bed?

Shaker beds are simple and functional. There may be elegant curves, but they stay clean and understated. Nothing too elaborate. The legs aren't heavy-set either; they're slender and taper down toward the floor, giving the piece a light, refined look.

Where can I buy a Shaker solid wood platform bed online?

Right here at T.Y. Fine Furniture. We offer a modest Shaker bedroom collection, including a bed frame and a matching side table. Other builders across the country offer Shaker-style pieces.

How can I choose a durable Shaker solid wood platform bed?

Start by checking the edges and the backside of the piece. It should be solid wood throughout. Look for the end grain, which is one of the clearest signs of quality in furniture. If possible, visit a showroom and test the bed in person; it'll give you a much better sense of how the piece looks and feels.

Is Shaker furniture still made?

Yes and no. If you mean furniture made by the Shakers themselves, then no. The Shakers were a religious sect renowned for their furniture centuries ago, and their numbers have dwindled significantly since.

But if you mean the style, then yes. Many furniture makers, including us, still build Shaker-style pieces today.

What's the difference between Shaker and Amish furniture?

"Shaker" and "Amish" really describe the makers rather than a single style, though a few features tend to set them apart.

Shaker furniture is minimalist: simple, clean, and visually light. Amish furniture spans a wider range of styles, including the popular Mission style, which tends to look heavier, with thick stiles and rails, square edges, and medium-to-dark stains. Amish makers may also build in the Shaker style.
