Shop Non-Toxic FurnitureWhy it matters
Most furniture off-gasses chemicals long after delivery
The furniture industry relies on engineered wood, synthetic adhesives, and solvent-based finishes that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into your indoor air — sometimes for years. The bedroom, where you spend a third of your life, is often the most chemically loaded room in a home.
The EPA estimates that indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Furniture is one of the primary sources.
Formaldehyde in engineered wood
MDF, particleboard, and plywood — the cores of most mass-market furniture — use urea-formaldehyde resins that off-gas for years. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen by the EPA. It’s hidden inside most furniture sold today, including pieces labeled “wood.”
VOCs in conventional finishes
Polyurethane, lacquer, and solvent-based stains contain VOCs that evaporate at room temperature. Prolonged exposure is linked to headaches, respiratory irritation, and long-term organ damage. Even “water-based” polyurethane is not zero-VOC.
Misleading “solid wood” labels
Furniture can be labeled “solid wood” even if only the exposed face is solid, with MDF or particleboard underneath. Always ask: is every component solid wood, all the way through?
Children are most vulnerable
Children breathe more air relative to body weight and spend more time near furniture surfaces where VOCs concentrate. This is why the materials in a nursery or child’s bedroom matter more than anywhere else in the house.
Our approach
Built non-toxic from the ground up
Every material decision we make — wood sourcing, joinery method, adhesives, finish — is evaluated through a single filter: would we put this in our own home? We’ve been building this way since 2004, before “non-toxic” was a selling point.
100% solid hardwood — no exceptions
Every piece is built from solid Ohio hardwood — cherry, white oak, black walnut, or maple. No MDF cores, no particleboard, no veneers over engineered wood. The wood you see is the wood all the way through.
Naturally fallen Ohio hardwoods
We source our lumber from naturally fallen trees in Ohio and Appalachian managed forests — wood that would otherwise go to waste. No clear-cutting, no imported exotics.
Milk-based, formaldehyde-free adhesives
Where glue is used, we use age-old milk-based blends tested for food contact. No urea-formaldehyde. No synthetic resins. The same category of adhesives used safely in woodworking for centuries.
Traditional joinery reduces adhesive use
Mortise-and-tenon, dovetail, and other traditional joints mean less reliance on adhesives and hardware — structurally stronger, longer-lasting, and inherently cleaner construction.
Our signature finish
The only furniture finish made from food-grade certified organic oils
Most wood finishes are so toxic they’re difficult to tolerate during application — and they rob the wood of its natural character. After years of frustration, founder Tarik Yousef enlisted his father, Dr. Ahmed Yousef — a microbiologist at The Ohio State University — to create something different.
Together they developed a finish made entirely from food-grade certified organic oils and natural waxes. Zero VOCs. No metallic driers. No thinners or solvents. Even the beeswax is unbleached.
Buyer’s guide
What to watch for when shopping for non-toxic furniture
The market is full of misleading claims. These are the specific materials and finishes to ask about before you buy — regardless of what the listing says.
MDF & particleboard
Made with formaldehyde-based adhesives. Common in nearly all mass-market and big-box furniture. Often hidden under veneer and still legally called “wood furniture.”
Polyurethane finish
Both oil- and water-based polyurethane off-gas VOCs during curing. “Water-based” is lower-VOC than oil-based — but not zero-VOC. Standard on most wood furniture sold in the US.
Solvent-based lacquer & stain
High VOC content, off-gases for months after application. Common on furniture manufactured overseas and on many domestic pieces as well.
Flame retardant foam
Most upholstered furniture contains PBDE or similar chemicals in the foam cushioning. These accumulate in household dust and human tissue over time.
Formaldehyde-based adhesives
Urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde are the most common woodworking glues. Inexpensive and effective — and they off-gas for years inside your home.
Vague “eco” or “natural” claims
These terms have no regulated definition in furniture. Ask for specifics: what species, what finish ingredients, what adhesives. If a brand can’t answer precisely, that’s the answer.

Non-Toxic Furniture FAQs
Truly non-toxic furniture avoids three main sources of chemical exposure: formaldehyde-based adhesives in engineered wood (MDF, particleboard, plywood); VOC-laden finishes like polyurethane and lacquer; and flame retardant chemicals in foam and synthetic fabric.
Non-toxic furniture uses solid wood throughout, formaldehyde-free adhesives, and zero-VOC finishes made from natural oils and waxes. At TY Fine Furniture, all three are standard — not optional upgrades.
Not automatically. Solid wood itself is non-toxic, but the finish applied on top can still contain VOCs and harmful solvents. Even “water-based” polyurethane off-gases during and after curing.
Non-toxic furniture requires both solid wood construction and a zero-VOC finish. Our proprietary organic finish is made from food-grade certified oils and unbleached natural waxes — no metallic driers, no solvents, no VOCs.
No. We never use MDF, particleboard, or plywood. Every piece is 100% solid hardwood. Our adhesives are milk-based blends with a long history of safe food contact use, and our finish contains zero VOCs and no cancer-causing chemicals.
Yes — and it matters most there. Children breathe more air relative to body weight and spend more time near furniture surfaces where VOCs concentrate. The EPA estimates indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, largely due to off-gassing from furniture.
Our organic finish is formulated from food-grade certified oils — safe for children’s furniture, cribs, cutting boards, and toys. It’s the same finish we use in our own homes.
Ask three direct questions: Is every component solid wood — not MDF or particleboard under a veneer? What is the finish made from, and does it contain zero VOCs with no metallic driers or solvents? What adhesives are used — are they free of urea-formaldehyde?
Certifications like GREENGUARD Gold measure emission levels — not the absence of chemicals at the source. Our furniture is built to eliminate harmful chemistry entirely, not reduce it to an acceptable threshold.
Yes. Unlike film finishes (polyurethane, lacquer) that need stripping, our organic oil-wax finish can be refreshed with a new application of our Furniture Grade Oil+Wax or Food Grade Oil. Most surface scratches can be addressed with a light buff and an extra coat of wax — no stripping, no professional refinisher needed.
