"Most finishes were so toxic it was hard to breathe during application — and they always robbed the wood of its natural beauty. All the skill we put into a piece was wasted on common industrial chemicals."
— Tarik Yousef, Founder & Owner, T.Y. Fine Furniture
The Origin of Our Organic Finish

Built Around a Problem No One Else Would Solve

When Tarik Yousef founded T.Y. Fine Furniture in Columbus, Ohio in 2004, he tested every furniture finish he could source. The results were the same: toxic fumes, chemical smells, and a surface that flattened the warmth and character of solid wood.

Rather than accept the industry standard, Tarik enlisted his father — Dr. Ahmed Yousef, a microbiologist at The Ohio State University — to develop something entirely new. Together they created an organic, heirloom-quality furniture finish that has become the foundation of every piece we make.

Our finish is the first of its kind — entirely food-grade, with zero Volatile Organic Compounds. The same standard used for surfaces that contact food. No carcinogens. No off-gassing. No compromise on the look of the wood.

Our milk-based adhesives trace back centuries — proven for food contact, tested to last generations. We build this way because we want our own children to carry on this craft, and because we're not willing to expose our team or our customers to chemicals we wouldn't accept ourselves.

The Finish

The First Food-Grade Furniture Finish

Developed over years of collaboration between a master woodworker and a university microbiologist. Every ingredient is food-contact safe. Every surface is fully cured before it leaves our shop.

The result enhances the natural grain and figure of Ohio hardwoods instead of masking them — the way a finish should work.

How We Build

Organic Is a Set of Decisions,
Not a Label

Zero-VOC Organic Finish

Our proprietary finish contains only food-grade ingredients and zero Volatile Organic Compounds. No off-gassing in your home. No carcinogens in our shop. Developed from scratch because nothing adequate existed.

Naturally Fallen Wood Only

Every board starts as a naturally fallen tree from Ohio and Appalachian managed forests. No trees are felled for our furniture. Each slab is hand-selected for grain, figure, and structural integrity.

Milk-Based Adhesives

We use age-old milk-protein glue blends — tested for food contact, free of formaldehyde, and proven across centuries of furniture making. No pocket screws. No cam locks. Ever.

Traditional Joinery

Mortise and tenon. Hand-fitted. Mechanical strength without relying on glue alone. The same methods used to build furniture that has survived hundreds of years. Built to outlast the people who buy them.

Material Sourcing

Ohio Hardwoods from Fallen Trees

The wood in every T.Y. Fine Furniture piece comes from naturally fallen trees in Ohio and the broader Appalachian region's managed forests. We do not cut trees. We work with wood that came down on its own — storm-fallen, end-of-life, or sustainably harvested from managed stands.

Each board is hand-selected at our 24,000 sq ft Columbus shop. We match for grain continuity, color, and structural quality. The knots, figure, and character are features — not flaws to hide.

Common Questions

What Makes Furniture Truly Organic?

What does organic furniture actually mean?

Organic furniture is built using materials and finishes that contain no synthetic chemicals, no VOCs, and no formaldehyde-based adhesives. At T.Y. Fine Furniture, this means a zero-VOC food-grade finish, milk-based glues, and solid Ohio hardwood from naturally fallen trees. We have built this way since 2004 — not because it became a trend, but because it was the right way from the beginning.

Why does VOC content in furniture finishes matter?

Volatile Organic Compounds off-gas from conventional furniture finishes for months or years after purchase. Inside a home, VOC concentrations can be significantly higher than outdoors. Exposure is linked to respiratory issues, headaches, and long-term health risks including certain cancers. Our finish contains zero VOCs — it is safe the moment it enters your home.

Is sustainable furniture more expensive?

Built correctly, organic solid wood furniture costs more than mass-produced alternatives — but it is built to last generations, comes with a lifetime structural guarantee, and never needs to be replaced. The cost per year of ownership is far lower than furniture replaced every 5–10 years.

Do you sell organic mattresses as well?

Yes. Our Columbus showrooms carry a curated selection of organic mattresses and bedding. When we opened our first showroom, we chose only brands that align with our zero-VOC, non-toxic philosophy. Our mattress selection reflects the same commitment as our furniture.

Where can I see the furniture in person?

T.Y. Fine Furniture has two showrooms in Columbus, Ohio: 4555 N. High St in Clintonville and 1103 Dublin Rd in Grandview Heights. Both are open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am–6pm. You can also shop our full collection at tyfinefurniture.com.
