The right one works with your room’s dimensions, complements the seating around it, and, more importantly, matches the way you use this living space every day. Before you start shopping, here are some tips for choosing a coffee table for you and your home.
Before scouting for a coffee table, it’s best to choose (better yet, buy) your sofa, sectional, or lounge chairs first. The right dimensions for a coffee table depend on the seating it will sit next to, so it’s much easier to shop for a table once you know what it needs to work with.
Choosing the Right Size
Before looking at specific measurements, consider your room’s layout and available floor space. Proportion matters, too. A coffee table should feel appropriately sized for both your seating and the space around it, while still leaving enough room for comfortable movement.
If you’ve already picked out your sofa, you’re in the right direction since you already roughly know how much space it takes up. A simple way to visualize proportions is to use painter’s tape on the floor. Map out where different pieces of furniture go around the coffee table before you commit to a size.
Coffee Table Height
Most coffee tables sit around 17 inches tall, but the right height for yours really comes down to the sofa it’s paired with. A good rule of thumb: keep your coffee table within one or two inches of your sofa’s seat height.
Coffee Table Width
For width, aim for a piece that measures between one-half and two-thirds the length of the sofa. This ratio tends to create a balanced, proportional look in the room. Of course, this isn’t a strict rule. Room layout, traffic flow, and personal preference all play a role. The goal is simply to avoid a table that appears oversized or undersized compared to the space around it.
Spacing Around Your Furniture
Coffee Table to Sofa
Give yourself enough room to move around the table without bumping into it every time you cross the room. At the same time, it should stay within easy reach for drinks, snacks, or the remote.
A gap of 14 to 18 inches between your sofa and coffee table tends to hit that balance. If you're working with a deep sectional or a larger, more open room, pushing that gap to 20 inches or more can help the space feel less closed in.
Coffee Table to TV Distance
This one allows more flexibility, but a walkway of about 30 to 36 inches between the coffee table and your TV console is a solid starting point.
As for how far back your seating should be from the screen itself, a helpful guide is 1.2 to 1.5 times the TV's diagonal measurement. So for a 55-inch TV, you'd want your seating somewhere between 65 and 82 inches away, or roughly 5.5 to 7 feet.
Your coffee table will land somewhere in that stretch between the sofa and the screen, so it helps to think about both distances together.
A Few More Rules of Thumb
In a larger room, choose a coffee table substantial enough that it doesn't get visually lost next to your sofa and chairs. In a smaller space, you might not need a coffee table at all. Side tables for holding essentials, paired with an ottoman for resting your feet, can work just as well.
Round tables tend to suit smaller spaces particularly well. Without sharp corners, they're easier to navigate around, and they create the impression of more open space. They're also a practical choice if you have young children at home.
