When shopping for handcrafted, solid wood furniture, most people focus on the design, then perhaps the wood species or finish. Yet, sometimes, the most important details are hidden beneath the surface. The way each piece of wood is joined together often determines how well the furniture will hold up after years, or even generations, of daily use. This is the very purpose of joints, and hardly anything beats the traditional ones. 

While modern materials and production methods have introduced faster ways to assemble furniture, traditional joinery remains unmatched in strength and longevity, especially on solid wood. And two stand above the rest: the dovetail joint and the mortise and tenon joint. They are typically used to connect parts at a right (90-degree) angle. Craftspeople have used these joints for thousands of years, and they remain the benchmark for quality craftsmanship today.

Dovetail Joint

The dovetail joint is one of the most recognizable woodworking joints thanks to its distinctive interlocking “pins” and “tails.” Rather than relying entirely on glue or fasteners, the angled shape of each piece mechanically locks the boards together, making the joint incredibly resistant to being pulled apart.

This remarkable tensile strength has made dovetails a favorite among furniture makers for millennia. Archaeological evidence shows variations of dovetail joints in ancient Egyptian furniture and early Chinese woodworking, proving that the technique has endured thousands of years with remarkably little change.

Uses in Furniture

Drawer Boxes

Connecting parts of a drawer box is perhaps the most common use of dovetail joints. Every time you pull a drawer open, the front of the drawer is subjected to force. Dovetail joints prevent the drawer front from separating from the sides, even after decades of use. 

Case Goods or Casework

Bookcases, cabinets, chests, and jewelry boxes often feature dovetail joints at their corners because they create exceptionally strong connections. At the same time, they accommodate the natural movement of solid wood, helping prevent the joints from loosening or failing over time.

Types of Dovetails

Through Dovetail

The classic dovetail joint. Both the pins and tails remain visible from either side, making it easy to recognize and often celebrated as a sign of quality craftsmanship.

Half-Blind Dovetail

Commonly found on drawer fronts, a half-blind dovetail provides the same mechanical strength as a through dovetail, but the difference is that the joint is obscure from the front. The pins and tails are visible only from one side.

Secret Mitred Dovetail

One of the most challenging joints to produce, the secret mitred dovetail conceals the joint entirely while maintaining the mechanical strength of a traditional dovetail. It's often reserved for fine cabinetry and luxury furniture.

Sliding Dovetail

Instead of locking corners together, this variation slides one board into another along a dovetail-shaped groove. It's commonly used to attach shelves, dividers, or partitions while preventing movement over time.

Mortise and Tenon Joint

While dovetails excel at resisting pulling forces, the mortise and tenon joint is designed to create exceptionally strong structural frames.

The joint consists of two parts: a tenon, which is a carefully shaped tongue on the end of one piece of wood, and a mortise, which is a matching cavity cut into another piece. The tenon fits snugly into the mortise, creating an incredibly stable connection, of course, largely depending on how well the parts are crafted.

The mortise and tenon joint is just as old as the dovetail, if not older. One of the earliest known examples dates back roughly 7,000 years to the Hemudu culture in China's Zhejiang Province, making it one of the oldest woodworking techniques still in active use.

Uses in Furniture

Leg-to-Rail Joints in Chair Frames

The horizontal rails supporting a chair seat are securely joined to the legs using mortise and tenon joints, allowing the chair to withstand years of twisting and side-to-side movement.

Apron-to-Leg Joints in Tables and Dressers

The apron beneath a tabletop is typically connected to the legs with mortise and tenon joints. This locks the perimeter frame beneath a tabletop to the legs, providing the main resistance against the side-to-side racking forces a table experiences over years of use.

Headboards and Footboards in Beds

Headboards and footboards use mortise and tenon joinery to connect wide rails to the bedposts. This creates a strong frame capable of supporting significant weight.

Mortise and Tenon Variations

Blind (Stub) Mortise and Tenon

This joint is the most common version of the mortise and tenon used in furniture. The mortise does not pass completely through the receiving piece. This keeps the joint hidden from the outside, resulting in a clean, seamless look.

Through Mortise and Tenon

In this variation, the tenon passes entirely through the mortise and remains visible on the opposite side. It's commonly used in heavy-duty timber framing and rustic furniture, where the exposed joint is part of the aesthetic.

Wedged Mortise and Tenon

A highly durable joint that locks pieces in place and is hard to pull apart, even when the adhesive fails. Small wedges are driven into the exposed tenon after assembly, forcing it to expand inside the mortise and mechanically lock itself into place.

Drawbored Mortise and Tenon

A mechanical variation where a hole is drilled through both the mortise walls and the tenon. A wooden peg or metal pin passes through both the mortise and tenon, pulling the joint tightly together while adding extra mechanical strength.

Both dovetail and mortise and tenon joints have their own strengths, and both have very specific roles to play. In a piece of furniture like a dresser, they often work side by side. A mortise and tenon joint might attach the rail to the legs, while dovetails hold together the drawers. For high-quality solid wood furniture, it’s common to see both techniques used in the same piece. 

What matters most, though, is the skill of the person making the joint. Traditional joinery is a hallmark of handcrafted furniture, but a dovetail or mortise and tenon cut carelessly won’t deliver the strength either one is known for. Loose-fitting pins, an ill-fitted tenon, or a mortise cut at the wrong angle can undermine the whole point of using these joints in the first place.
