How to Fix Scratches on Wood Furniture (5-Minute Guide)

Repairing Dent on Wood Surface

Dealing with scratches is an inevitable part of owning wood furniture. No matter how careful you are, everyday use eventually leaves its mark, especially on high-traffic pieces like dining tables, work desks, and coffee tables. The good news is that regular scratches, the ones caused by daily wear and tear, can be quickly fixed at home, particularly on furniture finished with oil or wax. Other types of finishes may be more challenging to work with, but we’ll get to that later. First things first, here’s our simple guide on fixing scratches on wood furniture that’s finished with oil or wax:

5-Minute Scratch Repair Guide

Light Scratches, Rough Spots & Raised Grain

These are shallow surface marks, the type that appear on wood furniture that is used daily. This is the simplest way to fix scratches on wood furniture, provided that the scratches are light.

What you'll need

✤ #0000 steel wool or 400-grit sandpaper
✤ Oil or wax finish

How to repair it

1. Gently buff the scratched area with steel wool or 400-grit sandpaper, following the direction of the wood grain.
2. Wipe away any dust.
3. Apply the oil or wax finish with a clean cloth.
4. Buff lightly once dry.

That’s it. In many cases, the scratches will blend away completely.

Deeper scratches or small chips

When the damage cuts into the wood itself, you'll need to smooth the area before refinishing. Depending on the size and depth of the damage, this may take more than five minutes.

What you'll need

✤ 220- or 320-grit sandpaper
✤ 400-grit sandpaper
✤ #0000 steel wool
✤ Oil or wax finish

How to repair it

1. Start with 220- or 320-grit sandpaper to level the damaged area.
2. Progress to 400-grit for a smoother surface.
3. Finish with #0000 steel wool.
4. Wipe away all dust.
5. Apply the oil or wax finish with a clean cloth.

The gradual progression through finer grits helps the damaged spot to blend naturally into the surrounding surface.

Why the Wood Finish Matters

One of the joys of owning solid wood furniture is knowing it can be repaired, allowing you to enjoy it for decades. However, not all wood finishes behave the same way when scratched, and knowing the type of finish applied to your wood furniture is important before you attempt to fix it.

There are two primary categories of wood finishes: penetrating finishes and surface finishes. Penetrating finishes, like our Oil Blend wood finish, soak into the wood fibers, nourishing them and enhancing the wood's natural character. Surface finishes like polyurethane-based products, such as varnish and lacquer, create a protective layer on top of the wood. Because they form a durable barrier, surface finishes are often chosen for furniture and other surfaces that experience significant daily wear.

Wood Furniture Balm

Since surface finishes form a distinct film above the wood, spot repairs can be challenging. A new coat of finish does not always blend seamlessly into the existing finish, which can leave visible repair lines, discoloration, or a faint "halo" around the patched area. Even when the repair is structurally sound, matching the exact sheen (matte, satin, or glossy) can be challenging on a small section.

Wax occupies something of a middle ground. While it is technically a surface finish, it does not behave like polyurethane or lacquer. Our signature Wood Balm is formulated to blend seamlessly into the wood surface and work in tandem with our oil finish. Together, they create a finish that can be renewed and repaired locally, making it easy to refresh areas affected by everyday wear.
