How to Select a Mattress Size

Sizing up a mattress

There are many considerations to keep in mind when purchasing a new mattress. They include mattress construction, including the filling and support, the budget and the size mattress you’re looking for.

Just like with many things in life, size matters when it comes to choosing the right mattress. You need to be certain the space housing the mattress is large enough to accommodate it. Purchasing an organic mattress from T.Y. Fine Furniture removes one of the biggest challenges of purchasing a mattress: delivery and set-up.

The SavvyRest and Naturepedic mattresses we sell come in pieces, alleviating the concern a bed won’t be able to maneuver through a narrow hallway. Our experienced delivery team also sets up your new mattress wherever directed, so you don’t have to worry about that, either.

Common sense dictates a mattress should be longer than the tallest person sleeping on it. An exercise for measuring width is two people lie on the mattress, crossing their arms behind their head without going beyond the mattress edge or touching their partner’s elbows. If the two people don’t like touching while sleeping but they do while doing this experiment, the mattress isn’t wide enough.

Most common mattress sizes

The four most common mattress sizes are:

  • King, measuring 76 inches across
  • Queen, generally 60 inches across. Both measure 80” in length
  • Full, measuring 54 x 75 inches
  • Twins measure 38 x 75

Queen mattresses are the most popular size and an excellent choice for guest rooms and smaller master bedrooms.
