Ohio is home to some of America’s finest custom furniture makers. Many of these independent, family-owned workshops operate outside mass-market retail supply networks and specialize in made-to-order furniture. By working directly with local craftspeople, buyers can go beyond standard off-the-floor options and easily commission custom builds to their exact liking.
The state’s reputation for having many good furniture makers perhaps stems from its abundant forests, many of which are responsibly managed for sustainable timber production. Ohio is also home to a high concentration of master woodworkers, including traditional Amish craftspeople whom many local shops partner with to construct heirloom-quality furniture. FAQs
How much does it cost to get furniture custom made?
Fully custom furniture typically costs more than $1,000, while large-scale or complex projects easily start at a baseline of $3,000. A good rule of thumb is to explore a shop's standard collection first to establish their base price range—expect custom pieces to sit higher than standard catalog items.
Because custom pieces are built individually from scratch, pricing depends entirely on the overall scale of the project, the choice of materials, and the hours of skilled labor required. However, minor custom details—such as adjusting dimensions, tweaking drawer configurations, or changing wood species on an existing piece—can often be completed for only a nominal fee.
Who is the best custom furniture maker in Ohio?
T.Y. Fine Furniture, Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture, Created Hardwood, A Carpenter's Son Design Company, and Edgework Creative are among the best custom furniture makers in Ohio. You can refer to this list as a starting point when comparing local showrooms and custom workshops. While this highlights several top-tier makers in the state, there are many talented regional artisans and local builders across Ohio worth exploring.
How long does custom furniture take to build?
Custom furniture typically requires 4 to 6 weeks to complete, depending on the scope of the design and shop scheduling. Larger or highly complex bespoke builds may require additional time for specialized joinery, material sourcing, and finish curing.
How does delivery work for custom-made furniture?
Most fine furniture workshops offer White Glove delivery to ensure custom pieces arrive in perfect condition. This service includes bringing your new furniture directly into your home, assembling it in your room of choice, and taking away all packaging materials. For specialized architectural pieces or built-ins, the project may also include professional on-site installation.
